New database leads
TEMS
Visualization enhancements
By NEIL STOBIE and ERIC ALLSTROM
TEMS Visualization 6.0 introduces a
number of features that extend the
tool’s functionality and usability. These
include support for new system releases,
a new database, and substantial en-
hancements to the GSM Module.
New system releases supported:
7#$-!ƞ0ƞSUPPORTƞFORƞ'0%(ƞ
UETR, and BulkCM
'3-ƞ"ƞSUPPORTƞFORƞ20-/ƞ-42ƞ
CTR, and CNAI export
New database
Perhaps the most significant enhance-
ment in this release is the addition of
Microsoft® SQL Server 2008 Standard
as the main data store. This compre-
hensive new data warehouse platform
offers the advantage of virtually unlim-
ited database size. It enables users
to analyze more data over longer time
periods, and as a result they have more
confidence in their decision making.
New for GSM
The GSM Module now contains a
binned map feature. When estimated
positions of measurement results have
been calculated, one or more databases
can be loaded into TEMS Visualization
6.0 to create binned maps. These do
not represent predictions but show the
actual conditions as experienced by
the live traffic in the network.
Binned maps can be created for:
3IGNALƞSTRENGTHƞDOWNLINKƞANDƞUPLINKƞ
percentage above target level)
)NTERFERENCEƞDOWNLINKƞANDƞUPLINKƞ
average value)
3PEECHƞQUALITYƞUPLINKƞPERCENTAGEƞ
above target level)
4RAFûCƞDENSITYƞCALLƞSECONDS
4#(ƞDROPPEDƞCALLSƞNUMBERƞINƞBINƞ
A typical use case would be finding
an area of poor signal strength and
then using the traffic density maps
to determine if investment in a new
site would be justified. The maps
can either be displayed directly in
TEMS Visualization (MapInfo format)
or exported to Google
Earth (kml
format).
The GSM Module also offers two
important new reports:
GSM Find Faulty Antenna eXpert
Report – shows the measurements
made on the receive branches,
through the FFAX feature in the OSS-
RC, of signal strength differences
(RxLev A – RxLev B) on both cell
and RX levels. The report also shows
if these differences increase with
timing advances. This helps detect
vertical misalignment when different
antennas are used for the receive
branches.
GSM Speech Quality Report
shows distribution graphs of the up-
link speech quality as experienced by
subscribers. It also estimates what
the speech quality would have been
if the AMR codec set had not been
available.
The GSM Tracing Module now sup-
ports the Cell Traffic Recording (CTR)
format from the OSS-RC. Event data
for calls passing through a specific
cell can be captured in a CTR file, and
the file can then be analyzed in TEMS
Visualization. This makes it possible to
investigate the performance of a single
cell in great detail.
Overall, the new features in TEMS
Visualization 6.0 enhance its ability to
use call-event data to detect network
problems that other solutions do not.
TEMS Visualization gives operators easy access to
comprehensive event-based data, all the way down to the
individual call level. This unique product bridges the gap
between performance management tools and traditional
drive-test data, providing RF engineers with an easier way to
troubleshoot network problems in both GSM and WCDMA
networks.
